It’s five days after Black Friday and industry reports are that it was the most profitable year yet. Consumers were eager to make purchases for themselves and their loved ones, and chances are that you were ready to participate by offering gift cards. But selling gift cards is more than just throwing up a display stand with some plastic cards and envelopes. Are you making any of these gift card mistakes?

  • Not marketing gift cards. You can’t sit them on the counter and expect them to sell. What are you doing to promote your gift cards?
  • Not training staff to up-sell. Is your staff offering gift cards with each purchase or talking to your customers about your gift card promotions? Does your staff know what your gift card promotions are?
  • Not training staff on how to sell/redeem gift cards. Does your staff know how to properly ring in and redeem gift cards? Can everyone redeem gift cards on a multiple-transaction purchase? Make sure to avoid upset customers by talking to your staff about these different situations.
  • Only selling during the holidays. Sure, this is the prime time for gift card sales. But gift cards make great presents all year. Don’t forget about them when January gets here!
  • Missing out on non-profit donation opportunities. If your customers ask you to donate to their charity or other non-profit, donate gift cards! Use these great causes as an opportunity to support your local charities or businesses while promoting your gift card services.
  • Using gift certificates. Gift certificates open you up for major theft issues – just don’t do it!

What are some other gift card mistakes you’ve made – or witnessed?
